I painted this piece based on a photograph taken in Chicago by Vivian Maier. It began as a study of the variations in grayscale from black to white but grew to comment on the supposed normalcy of referring to anyone in America as American. With this, I hope to bring attention to the fact that people of color in America have this title of ‘African’ American seemingly to separate them from being fully American.

This piece began as a study of color, but while making the collage I assembled fragments of memories and items that I admire and have an attachment with. The resulting aesthetic of blues, oranges, browns and greys radiate a feeling of bright blissfulness, which I associate with the summertime. I connected this with the memories of summer travels in the past, which have transformed into a glimpse of a dream in my mind. This leaves me longing for more travel, and as I created this piece the dream came alive once again.

This collage began as a black, white and grey-scale study. As I created it, I combined static elements and patterns to evoke stability, while becoming dynamic. I placed the cut outs and frames of cut outs to emphasize their connection while giving them a new meaning. In this way I have created meanings in the voids of the objects that are cut out.
